What I do when I’m not writing…

Posted on

Phew… It's been a crazy couple of weeks!!

I just published Barefoot Kisses (which went as high as #35 in the Kindle Store!) and now Kisses From Jack is currently on its free run (ending 8/15/14). That's a lot of book to put out. And promo. And anxiously watch the reviews pile in. And then promo some more. Whew.

Now that it's done, I finally have some time to do some projects. After finishing those two books, my brain needed a creative, non-writing outlet. This is my most recent creation: A weighted sensory blanket (WITH SPACE!)

My son is nearly 2.5 years old (holy crap did time fly!) and he has some sensory issues. Most nights, he goes to bed in his Elmo bed, but around 2am he creeps into bed with me and snuggles until morning. The only downside is that he wants to be the center line in the letter H. We have a queen bed and he's over 3 feet tall. It gets cozy real quick.

I read about these weighted blankets giving a hugging sensation to kids through the night, and it immediately sounded like something my son could use. So I went online to go buy him one only to find they were all priced in the $200 range. For a plain blue, boring blanket. I like to quilt, so I decided to make my own.

I got the inspiration for the practical parts from Mama Smiles Blog. She has a nice diagram and explanation 🙂

For my blanket, I found two space wall hangings (from fabric.com) measuring 24×57 and then got a yard of the space shuttle fabric for the sides. (Each shuttle side is 7 in wide) For the weight, I found those plastic “bead” looking things that go in flower arrangements. (Not the water absorption kind, but the ones that look like bead rejects). The blankets are supposed to weigh between 10-20% of the child's body weight. My string bean child weighs right around 30lbs, so I used 5lbs of beads.

I sat down and spent a whole day doing nothing but sewing, filling, and sewing. It was fabulous 😀 $30 in fabric+ $15 in “beads”+ thread and some time= awesome blanket. It is nice and heavy. I like laying under it!

The kiddo LOVES it. He's super into space right now, so every time he sees it, he lights up and does the space shuttle countdown to BLAST OFF. (Did I mention he's only 2 years old and can count forward AND backward from 20? And knows the alphabet? No? I need to brag more… I probably just need more non-child sleep)

Tonight will be the first test to see if he will stay all night in his own bed without needing Momma snuggles in the middle of the night. Here's hoping space blanket does the trick!

Who meets Prince Charming in an elevator while carrying their broken shoe?

Lena Masterson was having a rough day.

Her coffee pot exploded, her favorite heel broke on the way to work, her computer died, and her coworker sabotaged her performance review that she should have aced. To top it all off, she had to stay late to fix someone else's mistake. So when she literally ran into a handsome stranger at work, she was fairly certain that it might actually be the worst day of her life. Instead, it was the start of something wonderful.

From the moment she nearly bowled the man over, she couldn't take her mind off of him. She didn't know anything about him, and could only assume that he was someone's assistant. Still, the encounter left her with new self-confidence. She made a move assertive enough to get the attention of her boss' boss, and be granted a new position as the personal paralegal of the head partner. This promotion soon led to an important trip to the Caribbean, where she saw a familiar face on the beach…

Everything seemed perfect when she was in Aiden's arms (other than her missing shoe), but he was holding something back. Worse, Lena was keeping a secret from him as well. She knew that she couldn't keep up her little white lie forever, but it turned out that Aiden's secret was much bigger. Much much much bigger. A billion times bigger, in fact. Even though he treated her like Cinderella at the ball, it was possible that the billionaire playboy just thought of her as one of his “flavors of the week”. After saying goodbye with one last barefoot kiss and returning to the real world, there was a burning question on Lena's mind: Did this Prince Charming love her as much as she loved him?

Excerpt:

He brushed hair from my face and back behind my ear. I loved that he did that. It made me feel cherished. “You are so beautiful.”

I looked up, my guilt melted by the heat in his eyes. Want made his gaze burn and set my soul aflame. He kissed me again, this time slower and with more purpose. His tongue infused raw desire straight into my mouth. He reached for my shirt, lifting it easily up over my head.

I moaned his name against his kiss as the shirt cleared. “I thought we were fishing…” I murmured as his hands caressed the fabric of my swim top, my nipples hardening and responding to his touch.

He nibbled on my shoulder, sending heat straight down my spine and to my core. “I can stop if you want…”

“No, no, no… don't stop,” I gasped as he used put his mouth to the delicate skin of my neck and sucked. He smiled against my skin. I bit my lip and looked out across the water. There wasn't a soul for miles, but the idea of doing it out in broad daylight had a delicious naughtiness to it…

PickBarefoot Cover

As an indie author, I make many of my covers myself. While lots of fun, it also means that I end up making a bunch of covers and then picking my favorite. This has worked out fine for the last few books, but not this time.
This time I have 3 favorites. Thus, I need your help to choose! Please vote on your favorite cover and I will add up all the votes through this blog, facebook and emails and pick the most popular one!

(If you vote, you don't have to share on social media if you don't want to. It just gives the cool graphic of all the faces of people :D)

Oh, and it should be up on Amazon by October 4th. 😀

Why Does Hurricane Kisses Have Two Covers?

Two covers for the same book? Why is that?

The darker cover (the stormy looking one) was created by one of my favorite cover designers, Erin Dameron-Hill. I loved it. It was fantastic and possibly one of my favorite covers (Saltwater Kisses is still my all-time favorite)

However, it wasn't selling.

People always say, “Don't judge a book by its cover,” yet, that is exactly what most of us do. As I am a self-publisher (my husband does the actual publishing part for me- I just do the creative stuff: words, cover art, and some promo) I see how a cover changes things first hand.

So, we changed it. The cover went from dark and stormy (which while accurate due to the storm in the book) it didn't fit the overall tone of the piece. Hurricane Kisses is really an overall happy book.

Upon changing the cover to something a little brighter and more consistent with the other books in the series, sales went up. People had a better idea of what to expect from the book.

It may no longer be the most accurate cover, but it is the better cover for this book. I still adore the original, and I am keeping it for the paperback versions because I love it so much, but what sells books is king.

Which cover do you prefer?

“Love at first sight is something for fairy tales. It doesn't last in real life.”

Olivia Statler hates Logan Hayes. It's not the fact that he's an executive of a rival travel company, or the fact that he's trying to buy her company, or even the fact that he won't leave her alone. Two years ago, the two of them seemed to have something that was amazing and real, but Logan's ego got in the way.

When a new resort offers her an all-expense-paid trip to woo new clients, she figures that a working vacation is just what she needs. As the youngest CEO in the travel business, she's honored and flattered. However, she isn't the only executive that the resort invited. When Olivia sees the broad shoulders and blonde hair of Logan Hayes, her heart races. Half of it is raw sexual attraction, half of it is anger at what he did to her.

Logan is determined to reignite their past spark, but Olivia does everything possible to avoid him. However, a hurricane strikes and traps them on the island, making it impossible to ignore the changed man in front of her. Only a storm as powerful as their passion will show them love or hate. Can romance survive the storm – or will their hurricane kisses be swept away forever?

“Everything you hate was done by my father. I don't want your company.” His brown eyes were flames, and my soul was the moth. I couldn't have escaped from his gaze if I had been blinded. He moved close enough that those eyes were all I could see. “I want you.”

I blinked twice. That was not what I was expecting. His words startled and excited me, but before my brain could analyze and process them, his hand was around the back of my neck and his lips were on mine.

His mouth was hot and insistent as he pressed it against mine. I fought for a moment, but his grip was too strong and his kiss too sweet. It was a kiss I had craved for two years and had tried to convince myself I could do without. I wanted to give in to him completely, but I was still too angry to budge even an inch. Instead, I just stood there like a statue as he kissed me. I was furious and turned on beyond anything I could imagine. After a moment, he pulled back and searched my face.

“What was that for?” I surprised myself with the amount of venom in my voice. His kiss had sent want scorching down into the very marrow of my bones, but I needed someone to be angry with, and he was the closest person. He had hurt me. His eyebrows came together above those beautiful eyes. Hope fell as he saw something in my expression that disappointed him.

Without thinking, I put my hand on the back of his neck and pressed my mouth into his. He didn't hesitate, kissing me back with a need that matched my own. He pushed me up against the wall. Our tongues interlocked as we found the valve for the sexual tension that had been building between the two of us for the past two years. My body responded to his every touch with a fervor I couldn't contain. Didn't want to contain. I wanted it to consume us both…

Wolf Six’s Salvation

salvationfacebookbanner

Have you ever had a story you just can't get out of your head?

That was this for me. I sat down to write the next installment of the Kisses books, and Captain Jackson Wolfe kept jumping onto the page. I wrote him an outline to try and get him out of my head so I could concentrate on not his story, but Captain Wolfe is not a man you say no to. He was not content to simply sit in his outline and wait his turn to be written.

So, I finally gave into him. The words are flowing out of my fingers (I actually had my first 10K* day because I can't get his story written fast enough!) This is an action packed romance full of sizzling heat. Captain Wolfe is a werewolf (the sexy kind, not scary) and his eyes glow golden whenever he is angry, protective, or turned on. (Thank you CW's Beauty and the Beast for showing me how hot that can be :D). Chloe is a heroine readers can really sink their teeth into (hardy har har). She's feisty and strong, but she can say no to Jackson about as well as I can. (Which means she really can't)

Plus, the cover is smoking hot. Whew.

I know this is a little different than billionaires, but I hope everyone will give it a try. I promise I'll still get the next Kisses book done, I just need to get Captain Wolfe to learn how to sit first. 🙂

*10K Day: Where you write 10,000 words in a single day. My usual average is around 3-5K with my previous best day at just over 7K.

Crepes!

Posted on

Oh YUM!

Crepes, or as my husband likes to call them “really thin pancakes” are my new obsession. I had been craving spinach crepes and blintzes, so I bought a new pan (http://amzn.to/14FJxjL) and found a recipe.

I might gain a million pounds because I can't stop eating them! My husband is rather found of this new meal inspiration as well. They are so versatile- breakfast (whipped cream cheese inside- or scrambled eggs with cheese), lunch (wrap up some turkey and cheese), and dinner (spinach and ricotta cheese filling). The possibilities are endless and oh so delicious. Here is the recipe I am using, taken from allrecipes.com, modified slightly per user recommendations (http://allrecipes.com/recipe/basic-crepes/)

Basic Crepes (makes about 8 crepes) (ready in 30 minutes)

Ingredients:

-1 Cup all purpose flour
-2 eggs
-1/2 cup milk
-1/2 cup water
-1/4 tsp salt
-2 tbls melted butter
-optional: sugar, vanilla to taste

Directions:

  1. In a large mixing bowl, whisk all wet ingredients (eggs, water, milk) until blended. Then slowly add flour, whisking to combine. Add the salt and butter, add sugar/vanilla or any optional flavorings; beat until smooth.
  2. Heat a lightly oiled griddle or frying pan over medium high heat. Pour or scoop the batter onto the griddle, using approximately 1/4 cup for each crepe. Tilt the pan with a circular motion so that the batter coats the surface evenly.
  3. Cook the crepe for about 2 minutes, until the bottom is light brown. Loosen with a spatula, turn and cook the other side. Serve hot.

Insatiable Reads Opportunities

I am loving the books of the Insatiable Reads tour. As I am participating, I was excited to support my fellow authors and have purchased every single one. They are amazing. I am going to have a lot of reading material for at least a month. (It would be more like three days if I didn't have to care for an infant and write my own work!) I keep picking one up thinking I will just read a chapter, but inevitably, I can't seem to put it down. My son loves it because I just sit and read my kindle with him in his room while he falls asleep; he wakes up after a while and then snuggles back in with a smile when he sees I haven't left yet.

These amazing authors have given me so much inspiration. I love the stylistic differences, the different ways each author describes their characters, and the pure creativity of their stories. I feel so incredibly lucky to be in the same category as many of these amazing writers. They have given me so much inspiration, and they are all wonderful people to work with.

Be sure to check out my first full length novel, Fire Always Burns! (Part of the Insatiable Reads Tour)
